🏔️ Sourcing & Mt. Elgon Region
Friends of Mothers was established in 2015 to support women in coffee. The group currently has 500 members with farms located in the Mbale District on the slopes of Mount Elgon.
The initiative manages certification processes and trains producers on best organic practices. This includes using materials like coffee pulp to produce organic fertilizers, creating an abundant source of plant nutrition that ensures better yields and coffee quality.
🚿 Processing Details
During harvest, each producer meticulously hand-picks ripe cherries and processes them through the following steps:
- Cherries are hand-sorted and floated in water to remove damaged and less dense coffee
- Producers use their own micro-mills to depulp, ferment, wash, and dry the coffee
- Coffee is dried on raised beds before being delivered to the Friends of Mothers warehouse
🇺🇬 Exporting & Quality Control
Friends of Mothers operates its own dry mill facility, which features a fully staffed cupping lab. This setup ensures strict quality control and traceability throughout the entire post-harvest process.
