🌍 Chelchele & the Gedeo Zone
Chelchele is located in the Gedeb District of the Gedeo Zone, a region internationally recognized for producing some of Ethiopia’s most refined coffees. High elevations, cool temperatures, and fertile soils create ideal growing conditions, allowing heirloom varieties to develop complex aromatics and crisp structure.
🤝 METAD: Quality, Community & Leadership
METAD’s story began after World War II when the Ethiopian Emperor granted land to Muluemebet Emiru, the first African female pilot and the family matriarch. Today, METAD is led by Aman Adinew, who returned to Ethiopia after a successful international corporate career to invest in his family’s legacy and local communities.
Under Aman’s leadership, METAD has become a model for ethical and sustainable coffee production:
- Over 70% of METAD’s workforce are women
- Educational initiatives including university scholarships and sponsorship of a modern elementary school serving 700+ students
- Comprehensive healthcare programs for employees
- Ethiopia’s first partnership with Grounds for Health, supporting cervical cancer screening for women in coffee-growing communities
🌱 Out-Grower Program & Quality Commitment
METAD operates an extensive out-grower program supporting more than 5,000 local farmers through technical assistance, access to modern farming equipment, and certification programs. Farmers receive premium prices for cherry, along with second payments after coffee sales, ensuring long-term economic sustainability.
Quality and certification premiums have also funded road construction and community centers, strengthening the broader region.
METAD is also home to the first and only private, state-of-the-art SCAA-certified coffee quality control lab in Africa, used to train both Ethiopian and international coffee professionals—underscoring its leadership in quality assurance.
